New Sermon Series Jan 3 - Feb 14

Where Did You Find That?  Strange, Shocking, and Amazing Stories from the Bible

1.  Sunday January 3rd. Exodus 33:12-23; God’s Hinder-Parts:  Moses asks some serious questions about the presence of God eventually asking to see God’s glory to which God replies that Moses may see his ‘hinder-parts’.  A strange story for sure, but it will allow us to begin to ask and seek answers to who God is, what God is like, which ultimately leads us to consider what it means to ‘trust’ in God.

2.  Sunday January 10th. Genesis 22: 1-18; The Binding of Isaac:  God commands Abraham to take his ‘only’ son Isaac to Mt. Moriah and offer him as a sacrifice.  The overwhelming question that always follows this story is… why?  There are no easy answers but we will find that this moment in Abraham’s life causes us all to consider the effects our actions and decisions have on friends and family.  It reveals the power our words and actions have over others for good or ill.

3.  Sunday January 17th.  Genesis  32:22-30;  Nocturnal River Wrestling:  Jacob wrestles with God (an angel?)  It is an odd story that seems to come out of nowhere.  But as we will see, after Jacob wrestles with the presence of God, his life changes.  We will consider the value of struggling with faith and persevering when discipleship is difficult and even painful.

4.  Sunday January 24th.  Genesis 38;  Keep it in the Family:  Judah abandon’s his son’s wife Tamar after his son dies.  Tamar is left to seek survival the only way she knows how; through her cunning and her beauty.  Although her actions could be seen as conniving and immoral by some, she is a heroic woman of the Bible for her courage and tenacity.  This story contains adult themes, so we recommend that the little one’s go downstairs  for some fun activities during the sermon.

5.  Sunday February 7th.  Job 1; God Must Hate Me:  Job is an exemplary follower of God and he has enjoyed the benefits of his faithfulness through a large family and great wealth.  Until it is all taken away, his children die, his wealth destroyed and his body stricken with disease.  This story asks one of the ultimate and most often raised questions of our lives, why do bad things happen to good people?  I don’t know if there will be any answers, but the re-telling of the story will allow us to find comfort and perhaps hope in the midst of our troubles.  It will also challenge us to ask ourselves, why do I follow Christ?  What is the point of our faith?

6.  Sunday February 14th.  Ezekiel ch’s 3,4,5 excerpts:  You Want Me to Do What?  God calls the prophet Ezekiel and commands him to do odd things;  Tie yourself up with ropes, speak to no one, lie on your side for 390 days, cut off all your hair and burn some of it, throw some of it up in the air, and go to town and whack the rest of it with a sword.  Just a few of the things Ezekiel is told to do.  Why does God tell Ezekiel to do all these strange things?  We will consider the answers and ponder these questions?  We are called to be ‘different’ but just how ‘different’ are we called to be?  What is supposed to be different about us as disciples of Christ?
