Sunday Sept 5 Seeking God's Vision

God's Promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob:  By retelling the story of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, we learn about Seeking   God's Vision, Pursuing God's Vision, Wrestling with God's Vision, and Celebrating God's Vision.  We will also tell the story of the Vision that God has given us and begin to wrestle, like Jacob, with how we will seek to receive and then give, God's blessing to our community!

Ge 12:1-3
12:1 The LORD had said to Abram , "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you.

2 "I will make you into a great nation
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you."

Question: How do we know God's vision for us as individuals and as a community of faith?  If you do know, come prepared to share how God revealed this vision to you.

Sunday Sept 12:  Kerygma:  The Church as a Community of Teaching and Learning.

We will retell a story from Israel's history as told in Deuteronomy 6, where God commands Israel to be a teaching community, as well as the story from Acts chapter 2 in which the first church devotes itself to the teaching of the Apostles.  We will also touch upon Proclaiming the story of Christ to others.

Ac 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship,

Question:  Who has been your Teacher in the Faith?

Sunday Sept 19: Diakonia: The Church as a Community of Service, global and local.

Today we will retell stories of the early church as found in Acts 2 &4, that recall the service the disciples offered to those in need. We will also remember our own history of serving and connect to the vision that God is giving us for serving others in our future.

Acts 6:1 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.

Question: Can you tell a favorite story of serving others through BBC?

Sunday Sept 26: Koinonia: The church as a community or fellowship.

Faith has become something of an 'individual sport' in American Culture.  Today we proclaim that we cannot be Christians on our own, we need each other.  We will take a look at a well known story, the Prodigal Son, but from a different perspective.  We will follow the Son journey from family and community, to the life of an individual and back to the family. This is found in Luke 15.  We will also look at the call of Paul in Acts 9 and talk about the importance of Ananias to Paul on his first days following Christ's new path for him

Ac 9:17-19  Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord-Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here — has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit." Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength. Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus.

Question:  How has having a community of faith helped you grow in faith?

Sunday Oct 3 Out of Town Rev. Barry Arruda to Preach

Sunday Oct 10  Creation Care; Koinonia with All Creation

Today we will explore as aspect of theology, discipleship and the work of the church that has been overlooked for much of Christian history but has been unveiled in the past few years; our fellowship with all creation, with the environment that God created for us to live in.  We will read Job 38:1-42:6 in which God's attention lies not with Job's suffering, but with the joys and pains of all Creation.  This story will force us to widen our circle of fellowship even further, to include all creation and not just humanity; and to consider our responsibility to live in caring and compassionate relations with all things that God has created.

Job 38:31-33
31 "Can you bind the beautiful Pleiades?
Can you loose the cords of Orion?
32 Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons
or lead out the Bear with its cubs?
33 Do you know the laws of the heavens?
Can you set up [God's] dominion over the earth?
NIV

Job 38:39-41

39 "Do you hunt the prey for the lioness
and satisfy the hunger of the lions
40 when they crouch in their dens
or lie in wait in a thicket?
41 Who provides food for the raven
when its young cry out to God
and wander about for lack of food?
NIV

Question:  What about God's creation evokes awe and wonder in you?

Sunday Oct 17 Leitourgia: Worship

Sunday Oct 24 Stewardship Sunday:

Sunday Oct 31 Intro to Paul:  Converted or Called?

Nov 7                    Intro to Paul:  Appealing or Appalling?

1 Co 14:34-35
34 women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

Sunday August 8th:  The Spirituality of Pants; or We are Living in a Material World and I am a Material Girl

Lk 12:22-26

22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
NIV
